Marc Cucurella has sealed his surprise transfer to Real Madrid, bringing his time at Chelsea to a close.

The Blues have announced that Cucurella will join the La Liga heavyweights on a permanent basis, as they let one of their best and most experienced players leave for £52m. Presently on international duty with Spain at the World Cup in North America, the left-back's move to the Santiago Bernabeu will be formally completed after the tournament.

On Sunday, it emerged that Chelsea had agreed a total package worth £51.7million for Cucurella's switch to Madrid, comprising an initial £47.4million fee plus £4.3million in add-ons. The transfer marks the end of Cucurella's nearly four-year stint at Chelsea, during which he made 150 appearances following his £63million move from Brighton.

"During Cucurella's stay at Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old defender was a regular for the Spanish national team and won the UEFA European Championships in 2024.

"Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements. We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career."

A statement from Madrid confirmed: "Real Madrid CF and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Marc Cucurella, who will be linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032."

Cucurella's departure comes just before Xabi Alonso's official start as Chelsea manager on July 1, following his appointment last month. Alonso, a former Madrid boss, will now begin the new season without the Blues' primary left-back from the previous campaign.
