‘Unexpected twist’: Carrick makes direct contact with 28 G/A forward to say he can join MUFC in time for pre-season

Marcus Rashford’s situation has now taken an ‘unexpected twist’, according to Spanish outlet Diario AS.

They claim that Michael Carrick has reached out to the forward to make it clear that he would be welcomed back at Old Trafford this summer.

Marcus Rashford: The state of play

It comes after last week’s confirmation that Barcelona would not be activating Rashford’s £26 million buy option, having just agreed a whopping £70m package for Anthony Gordon.

As a result, the Carrington graduate’s future in Catalonia is up in the air; new terms would have to be negotiated between Manchester United and Barcelona, though the former are adamant about receiving the full transfer fee upfront.

Reports have suggested that Bayern Munich are considering a swoop for Rashford after missing out on Gordon themselves. However, he would have to accept a significant reduction in his £325,000-a-week wages.

Could Rashford play for United again?

As things stand, the 28-year-old will be reporting back to Carrington for pre-season once England’s World Cup campaign is finished – and he could well stay there throughout 2026/2027.

Carrick is said to have made it clear to the attacker, whose No.10 shirt has since been inherited by Matheus Cunha, that he can resume his Red Devils career without any hard feelings.

Rashford’s complete record for United

Rashford only left his boyhood club due to a falling out with then-manager Ruben Amorim towards the end of 2024.

In January 2025, he joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season, before agreeing another loan with the Blaugrana last summer.

He notched 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, and ended his stint with a La Liga winners’ medal and a Spanish Super Cup winners’ medal to his name.
