Feyenoord have moved quickly to fill their managerial vacancy, confirming the appointment of a coaching figure with deep ties to both De Kuip and Liverpool’s recent history, in a move that has been described as a full circle moment for Rotterdam.
The decision comes after the club’s board, alongside newly appointed Technical Director Devy Rigaux, opted to part ways with Robin van Persie.

On paper, Van Persie’s final season looked respectable, with Feyenoord securing UEFA Champions League qualification by finishing second in the Eredivisie.
But the gap to the top told a different story.
Feyenoord finished a massive 19 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven, a margin the board considered unacceptable.
Concerns had also been growing internally over a noticeable dip in both performance levels and results during the closing stages of the campaign.
Across his roughly 16 month tenure since February 2025, Van Persie managed 58 matches, winning 30, before his contract was terminated a year early.
With the club eager to avoid an unpredictable outside appointment, Feyenoord turned to a familiar face, someone who left Anfield only recently following the managerial reshuffle that saw Arne Slot axed and Andoni Iraola installed as Liverpool’s new head coach.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is done, and the new Feyenoord head coach is Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who departed Liverpool’s coaching staff as part of the same backroom exodus.
Joining him as assistant coach is Sipke Hulshoff, another familiar name to Liverpool supporters, having served as Arne Slot’s right hand man both at Feyenoord between 2022 and 2024 and subsequently at Anfield, where he played a part in the club’s Premier League title win.
For Van Bronckhorst, this represents a significant homecoming.
During his previous spell at Feyenoord between 2015 and 2019, he managed 176 matches and delivered five major trophies, including the club’s first Eredivisie title in 18 years during the 2016/17 season, alongside two KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruyff Shields.
Since then, he has added further continental experience, guiding Rangers to the UEFA Europa League final in 2022 and winning the Turkish Super Cup during a brief stint at Besiktas, before his move to Liverpool ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Hulshoff’s arrival is seen as just as important.
Widely regarded as a sharp tactical mind, he is closely associated with the high pressing, progressive style that originally shaped this Feyenoord squad under Slot, making the pairing feel like a natural continuation rather than a fresh start.
The numbers underline why expectations are high.
Van Bronckhorst’s previous Feyenoord reign produced five trophies compared to Van Persie’s none, and the new management duo inherit a heavily resourced squad backed by Champions League revenue.
Their immediate task is clear: close that 19 point gap on PSV and restore Feyenoord to genuine title contention.
