Liverpool’s Dutch contingent experienced very different evenings as the Netherlands were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Japan at the World Cup.
While Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch delivered performances that will have encouraged Liverpool supporters, Cody Gakpo once again found himself facing criticism after another frustrating display.

Ryan Gravenberch was arguably the standout Liverpool performer on the night.
The midfielder provided assists for both Dutch goals and continued the excellent form that has seen him become one of Liverpool’s most influential players.
His ability to progress possession and create opportunities was central to everything positive the Netherlands produced.
With two assists in such a high-profile match, Gravenberch’s reputation continues to grow.

The draw ultimately highlighted three different stories.
Van Dijk remains the leader.
Gravenberch continues his rise as one of Liverpool’s key midfielders.
And Gakpo remains a player searching for the consistency needed to fulfil his considerable talent.
For Andoni Iraola, that final issue may become one of the most important challenges he faces at Anfield this season.
