Ex-Chelsea player and manager Roberto Di Matteo thinks his former club should consider targeting Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The Italian international has been tipped to leave the Magpies this summer, and Di Matteo says he would be a great addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad:

“If Sandro Tonali is to leave Newcastle this summer… he’s someone I like a lot. I think he’s a class player. He’s a good age, too. I’m not sure whether Chelsea need another player in that particular department; I suppose it would depend if someone leaves.”

“You know, they have Enzo [Fernandez], [Moises] Caicedo, Andrey Santos and Romeo Lavia. If one of those was to leave, then maybe. I would love to see him at Chelsea. But, for me, their priorities this summer should be in other areas of the pitch.”

Fernandez could leave Chelsea

Out of the four midfielders named by Di Matteo, only one of them has been heavily linked with a transfer away from Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Fernandez is said to be hoping to follow Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, but the Blues won’t offload him unless the Spanish giants or another team pay £120m.

Tonali’s asking price has put off other clubs

It is believed that both Manchester United and Arsenal have cooled their interest in the 26-year-old due to his £100m valuation, on top of the agent commission and the salary requirements.

Manchester City are still believed to be in the mix, but they will only make a move for Tonali if they decide against making a third bid for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Chelsea do, therefore, have a chance of securing the Italian’s signature if they decide to pursue him.
