League One clubs battle to sign Manchester United defender

Manchester United could see another defender leave the club this summer as interest begins to build elsewhere in the English Football League.
At the end of last month, reports suggested that experienced centre-back Harry Maguire had been offered to Inter Milan as clubs across Europe continue to monitor the situation of several United players.
The Red Devils are also preparing a number of departures at the end of this month as they continue reshaping the first-team and academy squads.
One of six players officially released by Manchester United this summer is now attracting significant attention ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
According to the Mirror, several League One clubs are battling to secure the signature of Sonny Aljofree following his departure from Old Trafford.
Although his contract does not officially expire until the end of the month, the 21-year-old has already confirmed that he will be leaving the club after spending 14 years in United’s academy system
Aljofree progressed through the youth ranks and eventually captained the club’s Under-21 side, earning a reputation as one of the more dependable defenders in the academy setup.
The centre-back also gained valuable senior experience during loan spells in League Two.
He made 27 appearances for Accrington Stanley during the 2024/25 season and scored three goals.
He then spent the first half of the 2025/26 season at Notts County, where he featured 11 times.
After being recalled by Manchester United, it became increasingly clear that his long-term future would lie away from Old Trafford.
Now, with League One clubs circling, Sonny Aljofree could have the opportunity to secure regular first-team football and continue his development.
For Manchester United, it marks another academy graduate moving on in search of opportunities, while for the defender himself, a new chapter appears to be just around the corner.
