Man United legend wants‘world class midfielder’signed by Michael Carrick–‘would love’him at Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has called on his former club to consider a sensational move to re-sign midfielder Scott McTominay from Napoli, in comments that have reignited debate over one of Old Trafford’s most controversial recent departures.

Rooney, speaking on his BBC programme The Wayne Rooney Show, questioned Manchester United’s decision to sanction McTominay’s exit in 2024, describing the move as difficult to understand given the midfielder’s work rate, versatility and influence in key moments.

The former England captain said McTominay was exactly the type of player Manchester United often lacked when intensity levels dropped, and suggested the club could now benefit from revisiting the transfer

Speaking candidly on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England captain questioned the club’s wider sporting strategy when sanctioning the midfielder’s departure. He stated: “I couldn’t believe Man United let him go when they did because he obviously works extremely hard.

“And at the time they let him go, he was actually one of the players who you wanted on the pitch every week because you felt like players weren’t working or weren’t giving the best and he was impactful.

“He was playing in a more advanced role and he was scoring important goals. When Man United let him go, I was thinking, ‘wow, what’s going on here?’ But you’d love to have him back at Man United now.”

At Old Trafford, McTominay was often used in multiple roles, ranging from a holding midfielder to a more advanced runner arriving in the box. That tactical flexibility, Rooney argues, is something United have struggled to consistently replace since his departure.

However, there is no indication from either Manchester United or Napoli that a reunion is being considered. McTominay remains under contract in Italy and is viewed as an important part of Napoli’s midfield structure.

Despite that, Rooney’s intervention adds further fuel to ongoing scrutiny of United’s transfer decisions in recent seasons, particularly regarding academy graduates who have gone on to thrive elsewhere
