Ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen says that Andoni Iraola’s style of play and his record of beating high-calibre Premier League teams mean the Reds should be considered title contenders.

Some have questioned whether the Spaniard (who has not won a major trophy as a manager) can make the step up, but Owen is confident that he is equipped for the job:

“Yes, of course [a lack of silverware] is a concern, but the board have taken a look and believe Iraola is the right coach to take Liverpool forward. He plays football with the right style, he has plenty of Premier League experience, his football is exciting and attractive, and there is no reason Liverpool can’t challenge for the title next season.”

“They have top players, they have played a style of football before which can complement the way Iraola wants to play, it’s exciting for Liverpool to go down this route. Iraola has had big results against Arsenal and Man City and also Liverpool, so he knows how a team can beat the big teams, so he has experience of beating these big teams he will come up against.”

Iraola needs a squad capable of winning titles

While the Merseysiders may well have appointed a coach who can win the league, it is up to those above him at the club, such as sporting director Richard Hughes, to make sure he has the necessary players.

Mo Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate’s departures on free transfers mean there are gaping holes in several positions that need to be filled.

If Iraola doesn’t get sufficient cover in several key areas, he could struggle to meet expectations.

What are the odds of Liverpool winning the Premier League?

Iraola’s side are currently third favourites, with bookmakers pricing them between 5/1 and 6/1 to finish top of the table next May.

Holders Arsenal are the leading contenders, with odds of between 7/5 and 6/4. Despite the departure of Pep Guardiola, Man City are still second among the runners and riders, priced between 5/2 and 7/2.
