Newcastle United could be given a boost in their hunt to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
Manchester City are reportedly interested in Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
A graduate of the City academy, the 20-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his contract. Charles enjoyed a standout campaign - establishing himself as first-choice keeper at Hillsborough - despite the club’s off-field drama.
And should he rejoin Man City, this leaves the door open for James Trafford to seek first-team football elsewhere. Newcastle United have renewed their interest in the England international despite failing twice to secure his signature.
James Trafford state of play
Toon chiefs were famously pipped to the post in the dying seconds last summer as City activated a buy-back clause. But in an unlikely twist, Gianluigi Donnarumma headed to the Etihad two games into the season to frustrate Trafford’s chances.
A hefty pay packet was initially thought to be an obstacle for Newcastle to consider a fresh approach. However, Trafford appears willing to take the hit to guarantee first-team football elsewhere.
The Magpies have already signed France under-21 goalie Ewan Jaouen but, at 20, are also looking for a more experienced shot-stopper. He arrived for around £20million and was aware that he would challenge against a more senior No.1.
Man City want Pierce Charles
Various sources indicate Man City are keen on re-signing Charles - who is available for a cut-price £10million. This would signal a win for all parties and Etihad chiefs accept Trafford’s desire for regular football.
After an FA Cup win over Salford City in February, Trafford opened up about his frustrations at how the season panned out. He said: “It wasn't what I expected coming into the season. I tried to guard against it.
“It’s the reality and I have to give it my best shot. It’s the situation I’m in. We train every day but making saves, it’s good fun.”
