Washington's Jordan Pickford sees bus route named after him

Football fever is sweeping Sunderland, and Stagecoach North East is marking England's World Cup campaign by temporarily renaming its popular E1 bus service the 'Jordan Pick-Up' in honour of local hero and Washington lad Jordan Pickford.

England’s number one Jordan grew up in Washington where he attended St Robert of Newminster Catholic School and Sixth Form College.

After being taken into Sunderland AFC’s academy as a youngster he went on to make his debut for the Black Cats in January 2016. Jordan went on to make 31 appearances for the club he continues to support, before being transferred to Everton following relegation.

To celebrate the now 32-year-old’s journey from Washington to the World Cup, the Jordan Pick-up service will run throughout the duration of the tournament.

Stagecoach North East's Head Office is based on North Bridge Street and is just a goal kick away from the Stadium of Light, where Jordan started his career.

Steve Walker, managing director of Stagecoach North East, said: "We operate right at the heart of the city and we understand how excited our customers are about England's participation in the World Cup.

"We're incredibly proud of both Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson, who are flying the flag for Sunderland on the biggest stage of all.

"So we thought we would mark the occasion by renaming our E1 service after England's number one for the duration of the tournament.

"It is just a bit of fun: hopefully both our buses and Jordan will be as reliable as ever during the tournament."

Operating from 6.45 am through to 11.09 pm, the E1 service runs from Fawcett Street in Sunderland to South Shields Interchange in the town centre.

The temporary rebrand forms part of Stagecoach's support for local communities and is recognition of “Sunderland's proud contribution to English football as fans across the city get behind England's World Cup campaign”.

Steve said that Stagecoach has been a longstanding supporter of the Foundation of Light, Sunderland AFC's official charity.

Jordan is set to take the field on Wednesday (June 17) for England’s opening game of the World Cup against Croatia.
