Dressing room forfeit and Carrick impact - What to expect from Man United Amazon documentary

Man Utd have agreed a deal for Amazon to film an 'All or Nothing' documentary throughout the 2026/2027 season.

Lights, camera, action. Manchester United have agreed for Amazon Prime to follow their 2026/2027 season.

Prime Video have promised to take viewers "behind the curtain" with "unprecedented access." United have considered agreeing to a documentary series over the last few years, but now believe the time is right.

United have brokered a record fee for a comparable documentary, meaning Amazon have paid more to enter Carrington than they did to get behind the scenes at Manchester City or Arsenal.

The club held talks with Amazon, along with other streaming services, to record a documentary last season, but sources have said that after internal consideration, it was decided not to proceed with a series.

Then manager Ruben Amorim made his stance clear on a potential all-access filming deal. Amorim was not comfortable with an intrusion on the first-team after a dismal season in which United finished an embarrassing 15th in the Premier League.

The board was recommended to drop the idea. Amorim willingly offered headlines to journalists, and he will be remembered as the second most quotable manager of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, just behind Jose Mourinho, but the former Sporting boss felt a documentary would be a distraction.

United have now agreed to allow the cameras through the doors for a mix of reasons. The record fee made it an attractive proposal, first and foremost, but crucially, the club is in a healthy position thanks to Michael Carrick.

After finishing third and securing a return to the Champions League, the Reds are well-placed for a successful 2026/2027, and there is confidence the wheels will not fall off in dramatic fashion in front of the cameras.

From United's perspective, Carrick is the perfect head coach to have in charge for an 'All or Nothing' documentary series because he is not quotable. He is not a risk on camera, he's not someone who will create waves by talking. The same could not be said about his predecessor.

Carrick is the ideal coach for United to put up on camera.

Carrick and Amorim are chalk and cheese. The press conferences have gone from box-office to more mundane since the managerial change, which has been music to the ears of United communications staff.

The difference in approaches was summed up when United lost 2-1 against Leeds at Old Trafford in April. When Carrick was asked about Manuel Ugarte's form, he publicly defended him, but he did not give him a single minute for the remainder of the season.

In comparison, Amorim did not hold back when he was asked about underperforming players. He said he could feel Patrick Dorgu's "anxiety", and admitted that Benjamin Sesko was "struggling".

Among journalists, there have been jokes that watching paint dry might be more fun than two press conferences per week with Carrick next season due to the return of European football.

The press has total respect and admiration for Carrick for the job he has done since his appointment in January, but purely from a media perspective he doesn't offer much, a big reason why United feel the timing is right to invite Amazon into Carrington.

Anyone who has watched an 'All or Nothing' documentary will temper their expectations, though. Amazon have promised unprecedented access, but critics say their 'All or Nothing' work is propaganda passed off as a documentary.

The documentaries are largely sanitised, so there will be no great shocks or surprises, but Mourinho suggested the Tottenham version was close to reality when he revealed he had "no idea" of what was being filmed.

But the documentary will offer insight into United's dressing room, which is a closely knit unit. Remember when Leny Yoro wore a sequin gold jacket in the Carrington canteen after losing a game of crossbar challenge? Expect more moments like that.

United's chief communications officer, Toby Craig, said: “Now is the right time to open our doors, so that for the first time our fans around the world can see behind the scenes of a club which means so much to so many people.

“This documentary will showcase Manchester United’s unique people, ambition and culture; from the iconic atmosphere at Old Trafford to the work that goes on behind the scenes every day at Carrington.

"We will share some of the stories of this historic club both with our fans and new audiences around the world as we compete at the highest level, both domestically and in the Champions League.”

The documentary is an opportunity to showcase the £50 million Carrington refurbishment to a global audience. Foster + Partners designed a world-class training complex that the club wants to show off.

Cristiano Ronaldo criticised Carrington when he orchestrated the end of his second stint at United during a blockbuster interview with Piers Morgan in 2022, saying "nothing" had changed, but it has now been fully refurbished.

Filming will begin in pre-season and conclude at the end of the campaign. The shooting will go beyond the first-team with plans in store to provide insight into the women's and academy teams.

United sources say they have picked Amazon because they believe their experience, ambition and track record make them the perfect partner. The documentary will be better if United enjoy a good season.

When City welcomed Amazon through the doors in 2017/2018, they went on to achieve an almost perfect campaign, smashing points and goals records on their way to winning the Premier League title.

“We are tired? F**k you!," shouted Pep Guardiola in a clip that went viral on social media. United will be hoping for similar success with the Amazon cameras in place, but don't expect many expletives from Carrick.

Nonetheless, it will be worth grabbing the popcorn.
