Speculation over Darwin Nunez’s future has taken yet another twist, with reports from Uruguay now sensationally claiming that the striker is returning to Liverpool.

Nunez looks set to be on the move again this summer, with his move to Saudi Arabia not going to plan after leaving Anfield last year. The 26-year-old found himself dropped from Al-Hilal’s squad for the second half of the 2025/26 season, resulting in him not playing a domestic game since February.

He now looks set to be on the move amid suggestions that his contract at Al-Hilal will be terminated, which has led some Liverpool fans to call for him to head back to Merseyside.

The movement has been gaining some traction on social media, with reports over the past week also suggesting that Nunez wants to re-sign for the Reds. Now, reporters close to the Uruguay camp at the World Cup are claiming a transfer back to Liverpool is on.

Martin Charquero posted on Monday that Nunez is returning to Liverpool, citing information from fellow South American journalist Juan Pablo Romero.

It’s suggested that confirmation of the move will not be given over the next few days, with Nunez having asked for his focus to be on Uruguay’s World Cup campaign. The striker will be in action later on Monday as his country begins its tournament against Saudi Arabia.

Nunez admitted earlier this year that he missed Liverpool’s supporters, despite only spending three years at Anfield, during which time he failed to live up to expectations after a big-money move from Benfica.

"I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss them [the people of Liverpool],” he told AUFTV back in March. “The truth is, they made me feel very welcome, and my family too.

"During some difficult times I went through personally, the people always gave me that affection, that support, and that was very important to me, and obviously I miss Liverpool."

Reports in Spain have also suggested that Nunez is being eyed up by Barcelona as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski. According to Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga side is hoping to sign him as a cost-effective option, having already spent big on signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

Liverpool.com says: This just doesn’t add up at all. We’ve said it once, and we will keep saying it - Nunez is not the answer for Liverpool.

Going back to a striker who has already failed to live up to expectations at Anfield, and has barely played a game this year, just seems like a bad idea, even if he is available for free. Add to that he’s been on big money out in Saudi Arabia, and will likely want a long contract, and it’s definitely not the great deal some fans seem to think it is.

We’re taking this latest report with a HUGE pinch of salt, not least because it’s come out of the blue and hasn’t been backed up anywhere else. Surely Liverpool wouldn’t go back in for Nunez.
