Chelsea Are In The Running To Land This Talented Defender: Good Option For Alonso?

In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus revealed that Chelsea are in the running to land Club Brugge Joel Ordonez this summer. It has been claimed that the Blues would have to rival Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the Ecuador international in this transfer window.

Ordonez’s Solid Season In Belgian Football

The 22-year-old was a rock at the back for Club Brugge in the previous campaign when he put in a string of impressive performances at the heart of their backline. Ordonez featured in 46 matches for the Belgian outfit last season, netting four goals in multiple competitions.

The Ecuadorian talent is currently among the best centre-halves in the Jupiler Pro League. Therefore, the Blues would do well to bring him to Stamford Bridge this off-season.

Ordonez’s current contract at Club Brugge will run out in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for Chelsea to sign him on a cut-price deal in this transfer period.

Will Ordonez Be A Good Option For Chelsea?

Ordonez is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can use his strong 1.88m frame to win his fair share of aerial duels on the defensive end of the field.

The Ecuador international is even proficient at playing his way out from the back. Ordonez is primarily a central midfielder but can also operate as a right-back if asked to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League if the Blues manage to bring him on board later this year.

We can expect Ordonez to bring more bite and steel to Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso’s defence. He has what it takes to nail down a regular starting spot at Stamford Bridge next season.

At 22, Ordonez has got the potential to be a world-class player in his position someday. Hence, he would be an excellent option for the West London giants to consider in the long run. However, Alonso has to give him some time to adjust to life at Chelsea before he can get the best out of the player.
