Latest on Jay-Z's£100m client"about to sign with Liverpool"

Yan Diomande is representing the Ivory Coast at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his manager Emerse Fae jokingly commenting on transfer speculation linking the 19-year-old with a move to Anfield this summer.

In the months leading up to the 2026 World Cup, Diomande was one of the players predicted to have a devastating impact for his country and in their opening game, he did not disappoint. Represented by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation agency, there is a lot being said about the £100m talent.

According to data from Sofascore, the teenager played five key passes, creating one big chance. His 80% pass accuracy was decent for a player who takes high risk with each action.

Excitingly, ahead of a potential move to Anfield, he was terrific while running at defenders, completing 15 progressive carries in the 90 minutes he was on the field. His 23 passes in the attacking third were also the highest of any player on the field.

Diomande unsurprisingly won FIFA’s Man of the Match award.

Ivory Coast boss asked about Diomande’s club future after 1-0 victory over Ecuador

Asked about Diomande’s club future amid major transfer speculation over a move to either PSG or Liverpool, Ivory Coast boss Emerse Fae jokingly responded.

“When we were in France, during the preparation, journalists told me he was about to sign with PSG,” Fae said. “Here, they tell me he’s about to sign with Liverpool!

“I don’t know, but for now, he will focus on the World Cup, and then afterwards, he can think about the rest of his career.

“Yan – what can I say? I can’t put it into words. He’s very talented, but beyond the talent, he’s very young and he’ll improve.

“He’s a kid who works hard, has a real team spirit, laughs with everyone, and he listens, listens to the technical staff whenever he’s given advice, and tries to do his best, as he’s told.

“It’s easy to work with someone like Yan, he’s so talented and has what is needed, plus he can give you the victory and was a real challenge for Hincapie, a Champions League finalist [with Arsenal].”

Why Diomande is perfect for Liverpool’s new dawn under Andoni Iraola

FSG sacked Arne Slot before the start of the World Cup, replacing him with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, and it’s fair to say that Diomande would be the perfect attacker for his style of play.

Under Iraola, now Man City attacker Antoine Semenyo was the Cherries’ most effective attacker. In Diomande, Iraola would have a similarly thrilling right-wing option.

While watching Ivory Coast vs Ecuador, I noted something that many of his detractors seem to miss when assessing Diomande’s value. He’s not (at least not yet) an elite goalscorer. However, there are a few wingers out there that can create big chances for teammates with the same unnerving regularity as Diomande.

Diomande is a chance creation machine. The people that don’t want him at Liverpool don’t understand what he is.

Liverpool, if they sign him, don’t need him to score 20-40 goals a season. They have Isak, he can do that. But they need someone who can create 2-4 chances per game…

Considering Liverpool already have an elite goalscorer in Alexander Isak, they need someone who can drive at defenders and create chances from virtually nothing in a flash. Combined with the creative power Florian Wirtz holds, adding Diomande to the mix would be like oil to a fire.
