A former Manchester United coach has officially been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours, receiving an MBE after decades of service to the club and the development of young footballers.
The honour comes during a period of significant change at Old Trafford.
In January, Manchester United parted company with Portuguese head coach Ruben Amorim after a difficult 14-month spell.
The club has continued to reshape its football structure under new leadership.
Recognition for figures connected to United has also been a recurring theme in recent momths.
Last month, Ella Toone was awarded an MBE, while former Reds Alessia Russo, Lou Macari and Lauren James have also been among those to receive honours for their contributions to football and wider society.
Manchester United confirmed on their official website that Tony Whelan has been appointed an MBE in the King’s Honours List.
The highly respected Academy figure stepped down from his role in January 2025 after an incredible 34 years of service.
Whelan joined United as a schoolboy in the 1960s before turning professional, later returning to help shape the club’s youth system.
During his time at Carrington and The Cliff, he played a major role in the redevelopment of countless young players.
The indoor pitch at The Cliff was even named in his honour.
In a statement released through the Association of Former Manchester Untied Players, Whelan said he was “profoundly honoured, humbled and moved” to receive the award.
He also thanked the many colleagues, mentors and young footballers he had worked with throughout his career, adding that they had brought him “boundless inspiration, happiness, joy and, above all, fun.”
Tony Whelan dedicated the accolade to his wife and his family.
He also highlighted the importance of youth coaching and the commitment shown by staff working in academy football.
Manchester United also congratulated former player Lou Macari, who received an MBE for his tireless work helping the homeless community.
