England football team
Jarell Quansah is grateful for the Liverpool exit. The English centre-back opened up on how leaving Anfield proved to be fruitful. He now plays for Bayer Leverkusen.
Quansah reveals benefits of leaving Liverpool
Quansah is a part of the 26-man squad that’ll represent The Three Lions at the FIFA World Cup 2026. As reported by ESPN, the 23-year-old centre-back remarked that his Liverpool exit enabled the World Cup call. He also added that it was not an easy decision, but eventually he had to leave his ‘boyhood club’. The England defender further added that he is getting better with every game. If he keeps his sights on the end goal, he’ll eventually make it big.
Jarell Quansah joined Liverpool’s youth academy in 2008, when he was just five years old. In 2023, the centre-back made his senior debut for the Reds. In between, he was also loaned out to the Bristol Rovers for a brief spell. He eventually left Anfield in 2025 to join Bayer Leverkusen. He was acquired by the club for an initial fee of £30 million, with an additional £5 million as performance add-ons.
Quansah’s stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Duels Won Tackles Interceptions
Bundesliga 28 4 0 103 28 27
DFB Pokal 5 1 0 16 1 7
UEFA Champions League 11 0 0 34 7 9
Jarell Quansah’s overall contribution to Bayer Leverkusen
Quansah didn’t have a very great time with Liverpool. He scored 3 goals overall for the Reds between 2023 and 2025. Two of them were registered during the 2023-24 Premier League. However, things changed for the better when he joined Bayer Leverkusen. Within a year, Quansah scored four goals at Bundesliga alone. This is a major reason why the defender was chosen by Thomas Tuchel for the English squad at the World Cup.
Before joining the England squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Quansah played well for Bayer Leverkusen. They made it to the semifinals of the DFB Pokal. Leverkusen didn’t have a great time at Bundesliga though. They finished sixth in the domestic league in the 2025-26 season. The German club got eliminated in the Round of 16 of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. Arsenal defeated them with a total aggregate of 3-1. The Gunners eventually finished as runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain in the finals.
Future Gameplan for Jarell Quansah
For now, Quansah is aiming for a strong performance at the FIFA World Cup. England have improved a lot since the 2018 edition. The Three Lions made it to the semifinals. This was their best performance since the 1990 edition. The Three Lions also made it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 edition. They lost to France 2-1.
England are currently placed in group L of the 2026 World Cup. They’ll commence their campaign against Croatia on June 18. Croatia had reached the final of the 2018 edition. They also finished third in the 2022 edition. The Three Lions will further play against Ghana on June 24. Subsequently, they’ll play their final group match against Panama on June 28.
Quansah’s defensive skills have made England proud in European **football**more than once. The Three Lions clinched the 2022 UEFA European Under-19 Championship held in Slovakia. Quansah was also a part of the English team that won the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, also held in Slovakia. As such, he will play an important role in England’s defense at the ongoing World Cup. It remains to be seen if England recreate the historic performance of 2018 or go even a notch higher.
