Olivier Giroud has suggested Mohamed Salah could still play at another World Cup, despite the doubts surrounding his future following his exit from Liverpool.

Salah is effectively without a club as he captains Egypt at his second World Cup this summer. The winger, who turned 34 on Monday, came to an agreement with Liverpool to waive the final year of his contract in order to leave the club for free after playing his final game last month.

No indication has yet been given as to what his next move will be, despite sensational suggestions that he could yet end up staying at Anfield.

After a disappointing campaign with the Reds though, it does appear likely that this could be Salah’s last opportunity to play at a World Cup - although Giroud thinks otherwise.

The former France and Arsenal striker is just a few months away from turning 40, but is still playing for Lille, and having found himself in a similar situation to Salah at what turned out to be his last World Cup in 2022, he sees no reason why the former Liverpool star can’t have at least another four years in the tank.

“I’m not thinking about that before going on the pitch, I just enjoyed the present moment, and you have to think about recovering well, taking care about your healthy lifestyle,” Giroud told BBC Sport.

“For Mohamed Salah, it will maybe be the last one, but I’m turning 40 soon and I’m still in good shape, so why can’t he do the next one?

“With the season he had at Liverpool, it’s a time to show himself and to step up because Egypt will be relying on him, definitely.”

Asked whether Salah could play at another World Cup, Giroud responded: “It depends about his determination, motivation, keep going outside of your comfort zone. I always said I would play until my body allowed me. If the legs are going, and afterward you’ve got the mental section, if you want to keep going as a competitor.”

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

Salah’s club future is likely to be settled after Egypt’s involvement at the World Cup, with one of his teammates even suggesting that a U-turn from Liverpool might not be off the table. The winger’s agent though has insisted his client has not made any sort of decision yet.

“Mohamed is doing perfectly fine and neither he nor I prefer to discuss sensitive future plans with people not involved in them,” Ramy Abbas Issa posted on social media.

“Both he and I are very private about these things. Yes, people may ask and they may get a standard polite response but that’s about it.”
