Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reportedly decided against pursuing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer transfer window, according to emerging reports.
The Italy international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months as United prepare for a significant midfield rebuild, with veteran Casemiro expected to depart at the end of his contract.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a £55m deal in 2023, had been identified as one of several high-profile options considered by the club as they look to strengthen ahead of their return to Champions League football.
However, fresh claims suggest Carrick is no longer convinced that the Italian represents the right profile for his evolving squad, despite earlier internal admiration for the player.
The United boss is understood to be prioritising midfielders who offer a different balance in terms of defensive coverage, athleticism and long-term value, amid concerns over the overall cost of a deal for Tonali.
Newcastle are believed to value the Italian at around £90m–£100m, a figure that has significantly complicated negotiations and contributed to United reassessing their approach.
Reports indicate that while Tonali remains highly rated within recruitment circles at Old Trafford, the club hierarchy has become increasingly cautious about committing such a large proportion of their summer budget to a single signing.
Instead, United are expected to explore alternative targets who may offer a more cost-effective solution in midfield, with multiple Premier League-proven options under consideration. The shift in strategy reflects a broader recruitment focus on squad depth and financial flexibility rather than marquee additions.
Tonali, meanwhile, remains a key figure at Newcastle under Eddie Howe and is still under a long-term contract at St James’ Park. Despite ongoing speculation over his future, the Magpies are not thought to be under pressure to sell and are expected to resist approaches unless their valuation is met.
The reports come amid continued uncertainty over Manchester United’s summer rebuild, with Carrick keen to shape a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts next season following a strong domestic campaign.
While speculation surrounding Tonali is likely to persist throughout the window, current indications suggest Manchester United are now cooling their interest as they reassess their midfield priorities.
