Arsenal transfer news: Nico Williams pursuit refuses to die
Arsenal transfer news: Right then. Word’s doing the rounds again. It’s that same name trailing Arsenal for two years now, Nico Williams.
Channels stay wide open, apparently. This is despite him putting pen to paper on a whopping new contract at San Mamés not so long back. According to claims from journalist Kostas Lianos, the Gunners haven’t shelved this one at all. They’re still actively chatting behind the scenes about where his head’s at.
Here’s the twist. That huge deal he signed was supposed to shut the door on this saga entirely. It didn’t. Reports floating around suggest Williams endured a fairly mixed campaign at Bilbao. The club finished just above the drop zone. Worse still, their manager departed after four years in charge. Not exactly the stable platform the winger hoped for. Add in the World Cup, and you’ve got a player whose stock could shift either way depending on how Spain get on this summer.
Why the interest won’t fade?
Why is this dragging on? Simple, really. Arsenal have tracked him since 2024, back when Barcelona tried and failed to land him. That interest from the Gunners camp never actually went away. Athletic seem open to business, too. One report claims club officials might sanction a sale for around £80m. That’s a decent discount on the release clause sitting closer to £95m in his contract. United and Liverpool are sniffing around as well, mind. It’s hardly a one-horse race.
Should Arteta make him priority one?
Honestly? I’d hold off calling him the most important signing.
Saka’s nailed on the right. Sure, the left flank’s been patchy for ages, but Williams managed just six goals and three assists in La Liga last term. Those are hardly numbers screaming marquee addition. A defensive reinforcement or a proper goal-scoring forward might do far more for Arteta’s title chances than another winger, frankly.

Williams brings raw pace. He provides a genuine end product when he’s flying, no doubt about that. But priority status? That feels like a massive stretch given the squad’s other gaps right now. Arteta needs guaranteed impact, not another project for the left side.
