Tottenham Hotspur join race for Manchester United midfield target

It has been a season Tottenham Hotspur will want to forget in a hurry.
Months spent peering down at the relegation scrap rather than up towards Europe, a brittle squad short on leaders, and a fanbase whose patience evaporated long before spring.
Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival was the reset, the Italian handed the rebuild and told to drag the club back to where it believes it belongs.
The early summer business has carried that ambition, with Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi reported through the door to add steel and experience to a leaky side.
But De Zerbi isn’t done, and his next target is the boldest swing yet.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have entered the race for Sandro Tonali.
Tottenham Hotspur join race for Sandro Tonali
The Newcastle and Italy midfielder is the man De Zerbi has earmarked to become the heartbeat of his new project, and in going for him, Tottenham are pitching themselves straight into a scrap with the biggest names in the country.
The appeal is obvious as Sandro Tonali has been vital to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle since serving his betting ban, racking up close to 50 appearances and double figures for goal contributions this season from a deep midfield role.
Technically flawless, relentless without the ball, a born competitor, he is exactly the profile that turns a mid-table mess into a side with a backbone.
However, they may not have as strong competition, especially from Manchester United.
Manchester United pull out of transfer race
The Red Devils have circled Tonali for months, but Romano now confirms they’ve pulled out.
The verdict from Old Trafford is blunt, he’s simply too expensive.
With United also chasing Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, the club have decided that prising two players out of St James’ Park in one window is a bill they won’t stomach, and they’ve turned their attention to cheaper alternatives instead.
United stepping back is precisely the gap a club like Tottenham is built to exploit.
However, even though United have pulled out, other Premier League sides are still keen.
Arsenal, fresh from a title win, have already made contact, and Manchester City are watching closely.
For a Newcastle side under no pressure to sell, with their man tied down until 2028 and a £100 million valuation, it’s clear they aren’t selling cheap, especially having sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £70 million.
