Liverpool fans were quick to remember the highs of 2024 when former manager Jurgen Klopp shared a selfie with Virgil van Dijk at the FIFA World Cup in the United States.
Klopp posted the photo on Instagram after the rare chance to reunite with his former captain. The former Liverpool manager smiled while wearing an Adidas trucker cap featuring a coffee cup shaped like a globe, while Van Dijk stood beside him as the busy slate of World Cup games played out on Monday night.
Liverpool fans filled Klopp's comments with memories of the trophies he and Van Dijk brought to the club before Klopp left after the 2023 season. Meanwhile, Van Dijk's World Cup opener caused rage in Japan after a controversial VAR check for offside.
They also commended the durability of the manager-player relationship, especially since Liverpool has already experienced multiple managerial changes since Klopp's departure.
One fan wrote, "Genuine happiness," while another added, "Best manager and CB combo ever." A third fan wrote, "This makes me smile. Gaffer and skipper reunited," and another replied, "Our captain and our legend."
The reaction showed how much Klopp and Van Dijk built together at Anfield. Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January 2018 and helped turn Klopp's team into one of the top sides in world football, winning eight major trophies.

They won the Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Community Shield together. Van Dijk became club captain, and Klopp secured his place as one of Liverpool' s best managers and remains in high demand by top clubs despite being out of the business.
Much has changed since Klopp left in 2024. Arne Slot led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his first season, but a fifth-place finish last season led to his sacking in May.
Van Dijk said he was surprised by Slot's exit and learned of it through the media as he arrived with the Netherlands squad. Liverpool have since appointed Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola as they look to start a new chapter at Anfield.

The Netherlands captain scored the opening goal with a header in the 51st minute, followed by Crysencio Summerville's goal in the 64th minute to double the lead. Yet he was still criticized for being outjumped during the game-tying equalizer.
Japan responded with goals from Keito Nakamura and the 89th-minute equalizer by Daichi Kamada. Both nations split the points in front of 69,285 fans, with Sweden currently leading Group F after their 5-1 victory over Tunisia.
