Manchester City have once again been credited with interest in talented Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
With the summer transfer window now officially open for business, speculation linking Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles with an exit from Hillsborough is only expected to increase.
The Northern Ireland international is among the most talented goalkeepers in the country outside the Premier League and it is no secret that Wednesday know they have a gem on their hands. He established himself as the Owls’ No.1 in 2025/26 and everyone is desperate for him to remain in situ heading into the 2026/27 campaign.
Although Charles is understood to have entered exploratory discussions with Wednesday’s hierarchy over a new deal, the Owls will have a fight on their hands to keep him at Hillsborough this summer. He is close to entering the final year of his contract and he has suitors here in England and overseas, including long-time admirers RC Strasbourg.

It was reported over the weekend by TEAMtalk that Manchester City are in the running to re-sign the 20-year-old, who left City’s academy to join Wednesday back in 2021. It is claimed the Etihad Stadium outfit are ‘preparing a move’ to sign Charles amid the possibility of James Trafford moving elsewhere. The report adds that interest in Charles has ‘intensified significantly in recent weeks’.
Establishing himself as an excellent shot-stopper and as a goalkeeper who is outstanding with the ball at his feet, Charles is well on his way towards becoming the full package. He produced a crop of eye-catching performances after returning from his second shoulder injury of the 2025/26 campaign in March, with his best coming in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Hillsborough on Easter Monday.
Following the stalemate with the Foxes, in which Charles made 11 saves, several of which were of world-class quality, Owls manager Henrik Pedersen revealed that David Storch, who had not yet completed his takeover of the club at the time, “loves” the Northern Irishman and that everyone at the club is determined to retain him this summer.
Pedersen told The Star: “In the big picture we want to be a club that can find and develop talent, let them be effective in the first team and make a sustainable financial model. For Pierce, we will all do all that we can to keep him in this phase here.

“He is a part of our identity and we would love to have him as a part of our future. I know David and everyone loves him - and that everyone will do everything to keep him. Let’s see what happens when the season is done.”
With exploratory talks between Charles and Wednesday over a new deal understood to have taken place, everyone associated with the Owls is desperate to see him continue his development in S6. He is guaranteed regular football and there is no doubt he would be central to Wednesday’s ambitions of returning to the Championship as quickly as possible.
His current contract situation, though, does leave Wednesday vulnerable in their quest to keep hold of him. The length of time remaining on his contract will also have an impact on the price Wednesday could command from a sale.
