Four reasons why Man Utd should bring back Marcus Rashford – Opinion

Growing reports are claiming that Marcus Rashford could be reinstated at Manchester United, and it might not be such a terrible idea.

The 28-year-old was considered the club’s top star for several years, but he was chased out of Carrington by Ruben Amorim, who omitted him from his plans in December 2024.

Rashford ended up joining Aston Villa on loan in January 2025 before signing for Barcelona last summer.

Despite registering 14 goals and as many assists, the forward didn’t do enough to convince the Bluagrana to activate their option to buy him for £26 million, as they instead decided to splash £70 million on his younger compatriot, Anthony Gordon.

Should Man Utd restore Marcus Rashford after Barcelona omission?

While the Englishman’s future remains up in the air, The Sun claimed that Man Utd are willing to accommodate their academy product.

The source believes Michael Carrick and his senior players would be happy to see the Manchester native back.

While many would describe this move as a backward step for a club that has done well to get rid of underachievers, like Antony and Jadon Sancho, United could still benefit from keeping Rashford around.

Tactical versatility

The England international is most comfortable when acting as an inverted left-winger, but throughout his career, he has demonstrated the ability to occupy any role in the final third.

Heading into the new campaign, Man Utd need a right-footed left winger to rotate with Matheus Cunha, as the left-footed Patrick Dorgu remains a somewhat unusual option. Moreover, Joshua Zirkzee could be on his way out, leaving Benjamin Sesko as the only centre-forward at the club.

Therefore, MUFC can solve two squad issues by reinstating Rashford.

Cost-efficient solution

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Rashford has the ability to fill various roles upfront, so INEOS can save money by confirming him. Otherwise, they might have to buy a new winger plus a new striker.

Others would argue that Man Utd would miss out on pure capital gains by keeping their academy product, but any profit registered will have to be invested in one or two new players, so the overall cost could exceed any revenues generated from Rashford’s departure.

Tactical suitability

While Carrick’s Man Utd is far from a finished article, the 44-year-old has been relying heavily on counter-attacks and fast transitions, a style of play that certainly suits Rashford’s physical and technical attributes.

The 28-year-old can carry the ball forward with his explosive drives or simply place himself in the right place to receive the ball before causing havoc with his neat touch.

A more mature version

While spending a year in Barcelona isn’t necessarily a severe punishment, Rashford’s omission was certainly a humbling experience for the player who may have perceived himself as untouchable at the club.

Therefore, Man Utd would probably get a more level-headed version of Rashford, who was accused of complacency over the years.

Due to the World Cup, Carrick will not have enough time to test the returning attacker at Carrington before making a final decision, so he may simply have to trust his instict in this one.
