Manchester United‘s Matheus Cunha confirms he tried to convince Casemiro to continue with the Premier League side.
The 34-year-old Brazil international arrived at Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2022 and his compatriot in June 2025.
Earlier this year, the Manchester United forward talked about Casemiro’s role in helping him settle at Old Trafford.
In January, the Red Devils announced the midfielder would leave when his contract expires. He was one of the standout players this season and even managed nine goals and two assists from 35 matches.
Manchester United star tried his best
Both Matheus Cunha and Casemiro are part of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the World Cup.
Tuesday’s edition of AS has an interview with the 27-year-old, who talked about his time at Manchester United.
When asked whether he tried to convince Casemiro to stay for another season, he said: “All the Manchester United fans and I did! Casemiro is one of our club’s great players, and he would undoubtedly help us a lot if he stayed here.
“He was one of the players who welcomed me with open arms when I arrived, and I’m very grateful to him for that. If I could, I’d make him stay with us for another year. I wish him every success in the future.”
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man finished his first season with the Red Devils with 10 goals and four assists.
On his debut season, Cunha explained: “When I decided to accept the United project, I was already aware of the magnitude of the club and everything surrounding it.
“I think it has been a positive season for the club. We have managed to get United back into the Champions League, and we hope to continue on this upward trajectory next season. We have a lot of confidence in our work.”

The South American has thanked everyone associated with the club for making it easier for him.
“From day one I felt comfortable and was very well received by the players, the staff, and the fans. I managed to find the necessary peace of mind to give my best on the pitch, and that allowed me to have an excellent season. I am very happy and I hope to continue helping the club achieve great things,” he added.
AS asked Matheus Cunha whether Manchester United are the Real Madrid of England. When responding to that, he sent to message to the English club’s supporters.
“We’re going to work hard to do justice to the shirt we wear and to the club’s rich history. That’s our promise to the fans. We want next season to be a season of triumphs,” Cunha said.
