David Bruce reacts as Sheffield Wednesday confirm ex-Sunderland and Manchester City arrival…

Simon Wilson has been named Sheffield Wednesday’s new sporting director after leaving Stockport County

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the appointment of former Sunderland and Manchester City figure Simon Wilson as their new sporting director.

Wilson arrives at Hillsborough after leaving Stockport County at the end of last season, having played a major role in the club’s rise from the National League to League One.

He initially joined Stockport as director of football before later becoming chief executive, overseeing a period of significant progress at Edgeley Park. Stockport reached the League One play-off final last month, where they were beaten by Bolton Wanderers.

Wilson now joins Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation from the Championship, with the sporting director position a newly-created role at the club. He brings extensive experience from a wide range of clubs across England and Europe, having previously worked with Manchester City, Sunderland, Southampton, Leicester City, Sparta Prague and Ajax.

Following his appointment, Wilson said: “Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most historic clubs in English football, with a unique identity, a passionate supporter base and a matchday atmosphere that immediately stands out. "The energy of Hillsborough and the passion of our supporters are powerful strengths, and I strongly believe successful football clubs understand their advantages and build around them. That energy and identity should be reflected in every part of our club - particularly in the team we build, how we play and the culture we create.

"Success will require patience, consistency and alignment. We are not looking for quick fixes, but to build a football operation capable of delivering sustainable success over the long term. I’m excited to get started and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Sheffield Wednesday’s journey.”

Chief Executive Officer David Bruce said: “Simon’s appointment is an important moment for Sheffield Wednesday. We are building for the future, and that requires experienced, high-calibre leadership at every level of the football club.

"Simon brings a rare blend of strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and proven operational leadership, having worked at some of the most respected organisations in world football. His appointment reflects our commitment to modernising the Club, strengthening our football structure and building in a way that gives Wednesday the strongest possible platform for long-term success.”
