Erling Haaland's kit won't look the same when Norway take on Iraq at World Cup 2026

Why Erling Haaland and others will wear unique shirt at World Cup 2026:
New Fanatics partnership: This initiative is part of a new licensing agreement with Fanatics, which will take over from Panini as the official partner for FIFA trading cards and stickers. The new collaboration is officially set to begin in 2031, representing a major change in the world of football collectables.
Collectable cards: Once a player completes their first World Cup match, the special patch will be physically removed from their jersey. These match-worn patches will then be converted into highly sought-after, one-of-a-kind Topps collectable trading cards that fans can acquire.
American sports inspiration: The concept of debut patches is not completely new, as it has been employed extensively in American sports for several years. Major League Soccer (MLS) effectively launched this same system for their players at the beginning of the 2024 season.
Shirt application process: While FIFA has not confirmed every detail, the application process is expected to closely replicate the existing MLS system. Each team will receive a supply of patches, which are attached to the upper-right chest of a player's shirt with adhesive just before kick-off.
Topps hobby boxes: After the match, the removed patch is placed onto a unique card that is randomly inserted into a Topps Chrome hobby box. In the MLS version, these boxes retail for around $120 (£88) and contain 21 packs of four cards each, including two unique autograph cards per complete box.
Player autograph: In the MLS system, these special debut cards are also physically autographed by the respective player to increase their rarity and value for collectors. However, FIFA has not yet officially confirmed whether the World Cup debut cards will also feature these highly desired player signatures.
Delayed public availability: Because the new Fanatics licensing deal does not officially begin until 2031, fans will have to wait a considerable amount of time to actually get their hands on these items. The debut cards from both the 2026 and 2030 World Cup tournaments will be stockpiled to create a huge set of collectables released after that specific date.
Massive debutant pool: This summer's tournament is expected to produce north of 600 unique debut cards due to the expanded format and several returning nations. Countries making their first-ever appearance include Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan, while nations like Norway, featuring Erling Haaland, and Scotland are returning after long absences.
