How Darwin Nunez’s camp responded to shock Liverpool return rumours

Darwin Nunez has been linked with a sensational return to Liverpool as he prepares to leave Al-Hilal, with the striker’s camp now responding to reports.

Uruguayan reporter Juan Pablo Romero claimed on Monday that Nunez had agreed to rejoin Liverpool, with an announcement set for after the World Cup.

This comes with an expectation that the 26-year-old will be free to leave Al-Hilal this summer and his former club losing Hugo Ekitike to a long-term Achilles injury.

But while it is a story that has excited a number of supporters, Nunez’s camp have dismissed claims he is heading back to Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano explained on YouTube that those close to the No. 9 have insisted the reports are “not true” and “there’s nothing ongoing” between Nunez and Liverpool.

Furthermore, The Athletic‘s James Pearce has cited senior sources at Liverpool in denying suggestions of a reunion with a player who left for an initial £46 million last summer.

Nunez, who was cut from Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema in January, has already been linked with a host of clubs including River Plate and Fenerbahce.

He scored nine goals and laid on five assists in 24 games last season but clearly has no long-term future in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to AUFTV in March – as Uruguay travelled to face England in a friendly – Nunez admitted he missed Liverpool.

“Yes, I’d be lying if I said no, that I don’t miss them,” he said. “The truth is they made me feel very good and my family too.

“In difficult moments that I went through personally, the people always gave me that affection, that support and that was very important to me.

“Obviously I miss Liverpool, I miss them a lot.”

Uruguay began their World Cup campaign on Monday night with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia, with Nunez brought off at half-time after touching the ball seven times in 45 minutes.

Liverpool are set to strengthen their attack this summer with at least two new arrivals, but there is no indication that they would even consider a deal for a player who was once their club-record signing.

RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola are high-profile targets while Hoffenheim’s Bazoumana Toure is also of interest.
