Marcus Rashford is reportedly set to prioritise a move abroad this summer rather than join another Premier League club if he leaves Manchester United.
The winger spent the latter part of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa, although a move to Barcelona had been his preferred option during the January 2025 transfer window.
Under Unai Emery, Rashford rediscovered his form and confidence, scoring four goals and providing six assists in 17 appearances across all competitions.
Champions League football was a major attraction for Rashford, and with Villa having qualified again for UEFA Champions League, they have slightly more flexibility in the transfer market. However, they remain constrained by Squad Cost Rules (SCR).
According to The Athletic, a return to Villa this summer appears unlikely. It is claimed that if Rashford returns to Old Trafford, he would prefer to honour the remaining two years of his contract rather than join another English club.
There is, however, a £40 million release clause available to interested parties - excluding local rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.
While Rashford impressed during his spell under Emery, his wage demands would disrupt Villa’s current pay structure.
A reduction in his weekly salary would likely be non-negotiable if he were to return - perhaps one of the key reasons why a move abroad may be more appealing for the England international.
