Manchester United’s attacking options remain one of the biggest talking points heading into the new season as the club continues shaping Michael Carrick’s squad.

The future of several players who spent time away from Old Trafford is still being discussed, with decisions needing to be made before the summer transfer window closes.

One of the biggest names involved is Marcus Rashford, whose next step remains uncertain after a difficult period with the club.

Marcus Rashford returns

The England international is now back under United’s control after Barcelona allowed their permanent purchase deadline to pass without activating the clause in his loan agreement, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on X.

Barcelona had the option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently for around €30 million (£26 million), but the Spanish giants decided against making the move before the deadline expired.

As a result, Rashford is expected to return to Manchester United, although his long-term future at Old Trafford remains unclear.

The forward is currently focused on representing England at the World Cup, with his first fixture against Croatia arriving on Wednesday, meaning any major transfer decision may have to wait.

Barcelona have not completely closed the door on keeping Rashford and remain interested in discussing another loan arrangement with United.

However, reports suggest the Red Devils are currently reluctant to reopen negotiations with the Catalan club.

The situation has become even more complicated after Barcelona strengthened their attack by signing Anthony Gordon, while Rashford himself has removed references to the Spanish side from his social media profiles.

Those signs have increased doubts over whether the 28-year-old will continue his career at Camp Nou.

Rashford’s relationship with United has also been damaged after he was placed in the bomb squad under former manager Ruben Amorim, before losing his iconic No.10 shirt to new signing Matheus Cunha.

Despite that, Carrick has not completely ruled out the possibility of Rashford returning and fighting for his place at Old Trafford.

Other clubs remain interested, with Bayern Munich and Aston Villa among those linked with the forward.

Rashford enjoyed a productive loan spell in Spain, helping Barcelona win LaLiga while contributing 8 goals and 9 assists in 32 league appearances, alongside five Champions League goals.

However, with United now taking their time over the next step, the player’s future remains one of the biggest unresolved situations surrounding the club this summer.

🚨 Marcus Rashford formally returns to Manchester United as €30m buy option clause for Barcelona has now expired.

No decision on future yet as Barça are still keen on keeping Marcus but only on loan.
