Ederson is already lined up in a deal from Atalanta, and Manchester United’s recruitment team are now focused on adding further depth and balance to the centre of the pitch.

Mateus Fernandes remains a strong target, with talks ongoing for the West Ham midfielder, while Elliot Anderson has effectively moved out of reach for the Red Devils at this stage.

The club are also considering a wide pool of alternatives, including Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, and Alex Scott, as they aim to strengthen significantly before their return to Champions League football.

However, another name has now entered the discussion as United assess value-driven options in the market.

Sander Berge back on Manchester United shortlist

According to The Athletic, Fulham midfielder Sander Berge is now being tracked by United as part of their ongoing scouting process, offering a different profile compared to some of their higher-cost targets.

The Norway international has impressed during his time in the Premier League and is currently with his national side at the World Cup, where he has the chance to further raise his stock.

United had previously shown interest in Sander Berge back in 2024 when he left Burnley for Fulham, but a move did not materialise at the time.

Fulham, meanwhile, are expected to demand a profit on the £25 million they paid to sign him two years ago, meaning any deal would still require serious negotiation.

The midfielder has also spoken last year about the speculation surrounding his future during his Burnley days, telling TV2: “It’s a bit crazy, but I was at Burnley training and the days went by as usual – even though things were happening behind the scenes.

“There were talks (with United), but not directly with me.”

Now 28, Berge could be viewed as a more cost-effective and Premier League-proven option as United aim to build depth across their midfield.

With multiple departures already shaping the squad rebuild, United are expected to sign at least two midfielders this summer, with a possible third arrival if Manuel Ugarte leaves the club.

As Carrick continues to reshape the squad, Berge has emerged as another option in a rapidly evolving transfer picture.
