Darwin Nunez is reportedly set for a return to Liverpool, according to claims from his native Uruguay, as his nation failed to secure a win against Saudi Arabia who continue their impressive record of opening group stage matches against South American teams. Marcelo Bielsa's side could only manage a 1-1 draw after Max Araujo saved his nation's blushes against the future World Cup hosts.

Nunez, 26, left Liverpool last summer to join Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal in a deal believed to be worth around £46.3m, departing shortly after the club completed a £79m move for Hugo Ekitike. However, his stint in Saudi Arabia has reportedly not gone to plan, with reports in February claiming he wanted to leave after being left out of Al-Hilal’s 25-man squad.
Uruguayan outlet Carve Deportiva now claims Nunez will return to Liverpool in the summer, adding that any announcement is unlikely before the World Cup ends. It is also said the former Benfica forward does not want any official confirmation of his next club until Uruguay’s campaign is over, meaning the situation is expected to remain quiet until after the final on July 19 (UTC, assumed).
Nunez’s spell at Liverpool was mixed, but he still left with 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 appearances, as well as Premier League and League Cup winner’s medals. He arrived from Benfica in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth around £75m, having built a formidable reputation in Portugal with 48 goals and 16 assists in 85 games.
