‘If I could…’: MUFC World Cup star confirms he’s been trying to convince teammate to play for United on int’l duty

Matheus Cunha has revealed that he has been doing his utmost behind the scenes to convince Casemiro to stay at Manchester United.

The veteran midfielder bid an emotional farewell to Old Trafford last month after playing his final game.

Casemiro instantly reunites with Cunha on international duty

Casemiro rounded off his four-year Red Devils tenure in the 3-2 home win over Nottingham Forest, before reaching an agreement with Michael Carrick to be left out of the squad for matchday 38 so that he could begin his World Cup preparations.

The Brazil squad are looking to secure their sixth title and star by the end of this year’s tournament, but dropped points in their opening group-stage fixture by drawing 1-1 with Morocco.

As well as Cunha, United are poised to have one more representative in the Canarinho side, as they have a full agreement in principle with Atalanta for Ederson.

His delayed call-up following an injury to Wesley meant that his United transfer had to be put on hold for the time being until a medical could be arranged.

Ederson will become one of at least two, and potentially even three, midfielders brought in to replace 34-year-old Casemiro.

It’s nothing short of a mammoth task for INEOS this summer, given the experience of the five-time Champions League winner and the impact he had on the team.

How did Cunha feel about Casemiro leaving?

Supporters did their utmost to try to reverse both Casemiro and the club’s decision to part ways, mainly by serenading him with chants of ‘one more year, Casemiro’ at every game after his exit had been announced.

Cunha has since revealed that he was also keen for his compatriot to stay beyond 2025/2026. The attacker told AS: “All the Manchester United fans and I did [try to change his mind]!

“Casemiro is one of our club’s great players, and he would undoubtedly help us a lot if he stayed here.

“He was one of the players who welcomed me with open arms when I arrived, and I’m very grateful to him for that. If I could, I’d make him stay with us for another year. I wish him every success in the future.”

When his contract officially expires at the end of the month, the former Real Madrid star is expected to join Inter Miami as a free agent.
