Newcastle's Tino Livramento looks set to miss the entirety of the World Cup after sustaining an injury blow.
England is due to face Croatia in its Group L curtain-raiser on Wednesday, though Thomas Tuchel's preparations have been dealt a significant setback, with Magpies defender Livramento picking up a hamstring problem.
Tuchel has a window of up to 24 hours ahead of England's opening fixture against Croatia to confirm a replacement, with Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah emerging as the likely candidate to step in for the stricken full-back. That means former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be overlooked again by Tuchel, despite Chalobah being a center-back by trade.
Livramento's original selection followed a campaign in which he notched 26 outings in total for Newcastle, despite enduring a season plagued by fitness concerns.
A string of knee, hamstring, and thigh complaints kept the young defender sidelined for 25 matches throughout the season.
The right-back holds six England caps to his name, having made his international bow under Lee Carsley in November 2024.

Meanwhile, Chalobah, 26, has managed just a single international appearance throughout his career to date — that outing coming in a chastening 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal twelve months ago.
Harry Maguire may well feel hard done by, having been a surprising omission when Tuchel initially unveiled his 26-man squad. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Maguire revealed he learned of Tuchel's decision via a video call.
Maguire said: "He FaceTimes everyone. It's quite an awkward call. Something got released in the media about half an hour before I got told that my place was in doubt. That was the most frustrating thing. It was a surprise at the time.
"I said straight away that it was a surprise. I was really disappointed. We had a few words. Look, I'm quite a big personality. I'm experienced. It was an honest conversation between us both. He really said that he can't really give me an excuse."
He added: "I thought I did enough to be in the squad. And I thought I could have helped the lads out there. I thought I would still have had a part to play on the pitch, and off the pitch as well.

"I'm 33 now, so 37 at the next World Cup. I wanted to go, not just play – I wasn't demanding to go and start the games. I'd have been happy to play one minute, as long as I was there with the lads.
"He really said that he can't really give me an excuse, but I think he said that he's gone with the four lads that he got through the qualifying in the autumn, in the autumn camps where he felt like they did well during them six games.
"But he did say that he can't really give me an excuse. But listen, that's football. It was tough to take."
