Deeney slams Cucurella over Chelsea incident - but he has completely missed the point

One pundit has torn into Marc Cucurella after the Spaniard agreed to join Real Madrid on a deal worth more than £50million. Cucurella was being heavily linked with a return to boyhood club Barcelona this summer, but he instead joined their arch-rivals in a move that will be seen as hugely controversial in the North-East of Spain.

Cucurella has been one of Chelsea's most reliable performers over the last couple of years despite not finding it easy to fit in initially. During the last couple of years, Cucurella has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world, playing a vital role in Spain's Euro 2024 campaign.

He now returns to Spain on a pricey deal that will likely satisfy all parties involved, but one pundit has taken exception to Cucurella.

Deeney launches Cucurella attack

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney criticised Cucurella for his outspokenness during his time at Stamford Bridge,

"I think there is an element with Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez, you weren't playing good enough to talk, so shut up," Deeney said on talkSPORT.

"This new generation of players, when things go well, tell me how great I am, pat me on the back and go on social media and tell you how great they are, the fans are wonderful. When they lose, it's not me, it is the manager, the owner, the board, it's all of these different things.

"I was here a year ago for the Club World Cup and they were absolutely loving it. Fast forward eight months and it's should have got rid of that manager. It's like come on, you were part of the problem."

Deeney criticism a little confusing

The reality is that Cucurella said what most Chelsea fans believed. Cucurella said that he would not have sacked Enzo Maresca, which reflected the view of most.

Maresca did a solid job at Stamford Bridge and ultimately lost his job because he challenged the board over their failure to sign a polished centre-back following Levi Colwill's near season-ending injury.

That should not have been reason enough for the sack, and Cucurella spoke up against that. Fans are desperate for players to use their voices, especially when there are things they don't agree with. Contrary to what Deeney is saying, Cucurella was not shrugging off any responsibility or throwing Maresca under the bus. In fact, by defending Maresca, he is inadvertently suggesting the form is the responsibility of the players.

Beyond that, there are multiple points of this Chelsea project that are worthy of criticism, and it's not as though Cucurella has regularly come out and spoken. The criticism is misplaced and a misunderstanding of the situation and circumstances.
