Portuguese coach Goncalo Feio has revealed he’s open to a return abroad as Motherwell hunt their new manager.

The Fir Park outfit are assessing candidates as they look for a successor to Jens Berthel Askou, who left for Toulouse.

Feio is understood to be amongst the names firmly under consideration by Motherwell after his decision to quit homeland side Tondela at the end of last season.

The 36-year-old took charge in March looking to stave off relegation, but was unable to do so and subsequently left his post.

Feio has options to remain in Portugal, but, having worked successfully in Poland - where he defeated Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the UEFA Conference League with Legia Warsaw - and for a brief stint in France during his coaching career, has made it clear he is willing to go on his travels again for his next venture as he looks to keep progressing.

Asked in his homeland if the first choice was to stay in Portugal, he told Record: “Yes. I’m very clear about where I want to go and where I can go. I know the path is hard, requires work, and involves many obstacles.

“I hope to continue demonstrating my ability as a coach after this small sample at Tondela. I think I can remain competitive anywhere.

“If it can’t be in Portugal, I’m already a citizen of Europe and it can be somewhere else. The important thing is that the path continues to move forward.”

Motherwell are looking to secure a new boss shortly with the club today involved in the draw for the second qualifying round for the UEFA Conference League with both legs of the tie scheduled for the end of next month.

Beforehand, the Lanarkshire outfit also have a pre-season trip planned for seven days in Denmark with the squad departing on June 29 and a friendly pencilled into the programme against newly-crowned Danish champions AGF Aarhus on Sunday 5 July.
