Marcus Rashford update: Manchester United unmoved after softening of stance

Barcelona allowed their €30m buy option on Marcus Rashford to expire this week, meaning they would have to negotiate with Manchester United if they are keen to sign the England international again. Nevertheless, the Red Devils are still pursuing a sale.

Manager Hansi Flick spoke positively about Rashford towards the end of his loan spell, where he scored 14 goals and gave 14 assists this season. He himself had declared on multiple occasions that he was keen to stay, and while Barcelona are not prioritising a move for him, they have not ruled out a return for Rashford. Certainly the arrival of Anthony Gordon would appear to sink the chances of that happening though, given both play in a similar position. They may seek a second loan deal for Rashford.

It has been reported by [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7361885/2026/06/16/transfer-dealsheet-man-utd-arsenal-liverpool/) that other Premier League sides have shown interest in Rashford, who has a €46.3m release clause available to any side but Liverpool or Manchester City. Yet the 28-year-old is more in favour of seeing out the final two years of his deal at Old Trafford, the first time he has indicated a willingness to remain there.

Part of that might have been a desire from new manager Michael Carrick to hang onto to him, but it seems that he may not have his wish fulfilled. Carrick has now discussed the matter with the leadership group at United, and [MEN](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-united-transfer-news-rashford-34122718) report that they have decided not to reintegrate Rashford into the fold. They will instead seek a permanent sale for the England forward.
