Gordon Strachan names the Manchester United player Coventry City should sign

Coventry City should target England exile Harry Maguire, according to former boss Gordon Strachan.

The Scot, who both played for and managed the Sky Blues, believes Frank Lampard needs a core of players with top flight experience.

And speaking to PlayUK he identified the Manchester United centre back as the kind of transfer City need to complete to bolster their squad ahead of their first top flight campaign in 25 years.

Strachan said: “ Coventry City under Frank Lampard, they need three players who have played in the Premier League and understand the pressure. Someone like Harry Maguire at centre-half or Kieran Trippier at right-back. That type of person will get you through.

“When you're a young team and you see these guys standing behind you, you think: 'that's alright, no problem’.”

Trippier has already made his move in the transfer window, swapping Newcastle for relegated Wolves, only to find the manger he signed for – former Boro boss Rob Edwards – was gone a few days later.

Former Leicester defender Maguire meanwhile is currently reeling from his omission from the final Three Lions squad for the World Cup.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a renaissance under Michael Carrick and having returned to the England set-up in March it looked as though he would be going to North America.

He’s highly unlikely to be going anywhere at club level either, having extended his Old Trafford contract.

However, Strachan does point to a lack of exposure to the top flight among Lampard’s squad, with Frank Onyeka the most recent to have played in the Premier League.
