Arsenal are aiming to bolster their youth ranks, signing emerging talents across Europe.
According to the Athletic, Arsenal are now considering a move for Elijah Upson — son of former Arsenal centre-back Matthew.
Matthew was part of the Gunners’ Premier League-winning squad in the 2001/02 season, making 14 appearances. His son, Upson, could now emulate him.
Upson is set to leave Tottenham at the expiration of his contract this summer, ending an 11-year stay at the club.
The 18-year-old centre-back is renowned for his pace. He was a national 100m sprint champion during his school days.
Upson joined Tottenham at the age of seven and has featured across several levels before earning promotion to the U21s last season, although he still featured largely for the U18s.
He made 23 appearances across all competitions, including Spurs’ 4-1 win over Arsenal in the U18 Premier League in February. He chipped in with two goal involvements last term.
If he completes a move to Arsenal, he is expected to join the U21s, who are now without a head coach following Max Porter’s move to Stoke City.
Elsewhere, Arsenal are pursuing Leicester City’s promising winger Jeremy Monga. They have reached personal agreement with the England youth international.
Monga already has senior level experience, having featured for Leicester 37 times, but he is unlikely to feature regularly, should he complete a move to Arsenal.
They are also interested in Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Emmanuel Mbemba, who has expressed his interest to join the north London side.
Mbemba has rejected PSG’s contract renewal offer. Arsenal would pay a compensation fee to the French giants if they sign the promising defender.
