Arsenal remain the club Newcastle United expect to make the strongest move for Sandro Tonali this summer despite increasing interest from elsewhere.
The Italy international has emerged as one of the most talked-about midfielders in the transfer market, with several leading clubs monitoring his situation ahead of the new season.
Recent reports have suggested Tottenham Hotspur have joined Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for the Newcastle midfielder.
However, Newcastle insiders reportedly still view Arsenal as the most likely destination should Tonali leave St James’ Park.
The Premier League champions have been linked with the 26-year-old since the January transfer window and interest has not gone away.
While Arsenal have yet to submit a formal offer, Newcastle are understood to have been anticipating an approach from the Gunners for several months.
That expectation remains unchanged despite Tottenham’s emergence as potential contenders.
Reports claim Spurs have been encouraged to explore a deal for Tonali, with new manager Roberto De Zerbi believed to be a strong admirer of his fellow Italian.
Even so, there is a belief within Newcastle that Arsenal remain in the strongest position if a bidding war develops.
Manchester City continue to monitor developments as well.
City have been kept informed of the situation, although their primary midfield target is currently believed to be Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson.
That could leave Arsenal as Newcastle’s most serious concern if the transfer battle intensifies.
Tonali has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders since returning from his suspension.
The former AC Milan star played a key role in Newcastle’s campaign and has enhanced his reputation with a series of influential displays.
His blend of technical quality, defensive awareness and ability to dictate games from deep has naturally attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Newcastle are determined not to lose him cheaply.
The midfielder remains under contract until 2029 and the club hold an option to extend that agreement by a further year.
As a result, Newcastle are expected to demand a fee in the region of £100 million before considering any sale.
The Magpies believe they are negotiating from a position of strength and have already communicated their valuation to Tonali’s representatives.
Despite the speculation, no formal discussions have taken place between Newcastle and any interested club.
That has not stopped Arsenal links continuing to gather momentum.
Mikel Arteta is expected to strengthen his midfield options this summer and Tonali’s profile fits many of the qualities Arsenal admire.
For now, the situation remains unresolved.
However, Newcastle’s internal expectation is clear.
If Tonali does leave St James’ Park before the end of the window, Arsenal are still viewed as the club most likely to test their resolve.
