The massive £50m transfer gamble Manchester United can't afford to risk this summer

Manchester United have been linked with a transfer bid for a winger worth £50m

Manchester United are likely to be among the busiest Premier League sides in the freshly-opened transfer window, and are on the verge of confirming Brazilian midfielder Éderson as their first signing of the summer – but he might not be the only World Cup star who makes the move to Old Trafford in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, The Athletic reported that Manchester United were “paying serious attention” to West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, who scored one of the Netherland’s goal in their opening 2-2 draw against Japan. Despite their relegation, the Hammers apparently intend to hold fast to a £50m asking price – but is Summerville worth that much to United, and how likely is it that a deal gets done?

Will Manchester United sign Crysencio Summerville in the transfer window?

According to The Athletic, whose story has been picked up on and reinforced by a wide range of media outlets, Summerville is just one name on Manchester United’s shortlist as they search for attacking reinforcements – but they also suggest that their interest is very real indeed.

With Summerville under contract until 2029, West Ham hold a strong negotiating position despite their demotion to the Championship, and while they’re prepared to entertain offers they aren’t necessarily likely to settle for a fee lower than the £50m they appear to have proposed as the Dutchman’s asking price.

A deal isn’t likely to be done quickly even if Manchester United do decide to make a bid, however, and not just because Summerville’s focus will be on the World Cup – the future of Marcus Rashford will also have a bearing on the way United approach the transfer window.

The club are still hoping to find a permanent buyer for Rashford but the hopes of reaching an agreement with Barcelona, with whom the forward spent the 2025/26 season on loan, appear to be receding. If he ends up staying put at Old Trafford, then The Athletic suggest that United are unlikely to sign a new left winger.

Rashford would apparently prefer a move overseas and while there are suitors in the Premier League, it’s suggested that he would prefer to stay at United instead of moving to a rival in the same division. If that’s true, then the odds that he stays put and plays under Michael Carrick next season may be higher than had appeared to be the case.

Rashford remaining at his current club would most likely end Manchester United’s interest in Summerville, and it appears that they will wait to resolve the England international’s future before making a move. That is the single biggest barrier to a bid, but United will also work to rebuild their midfield before turning their attention to other positions in the squad. If they end up spending more than expected on securing midfield reinforcements – Summerville’s team-mate Mateus Fernandes is among the more expensive targets on their radar – then they may choose to go without a new winger.

Despite all the obstacles, a deal appears to be a genuine possibility even if will probably be a while before we find out where Summerville’s future lies. But would signing the former Leeds winger be the right move?

Signing Summerville may be a risk United are better off not taking

The fact that Manchester United appear to be genuinely keen on Summerville may raise a few eyebrows given his relatively modest production at West Ham since he left Leeds two years ago for a fee which had the potential to rise to £34m.

Summerville earned that move on the back of an electric season in the Championship but has struggled to score or provide goals with the same kind of frequency in the top tier – his return over the past two seasons was just eight goals and five assists from 56 appearances.

The goal Summerville scored against Japan was evidence that there is a player in there that United could use, at least. They want a winger who can get close to the centre-forward, stretch defences, and contribute goals by cutting inside and taking defenders on, as he did to great effect in putting the Netherlands ahead in Dallas.

There’s also no doubt that United could use Summerville’s exceptional pace, even if it’s a weapon he hasn’t brought to bear consistently in the Premier League. He matches the profile of the winger United want, but the debate is whether he uses his natural skillset well enough, often enough, to merit a £50m outlay.

There are also question marks over his fitness. Summerville missed eight months in 2025 due to a serious hamstring injury which required surgery and missed another month of football this year due to a calf issue. His body hasn’t held up well since moving to the London Stadium, and United will likely want a close look at his medicals before taking the plunge.

A bid for Summerville would, in short, be distinctively risky. He has shown flashes of the kind of winger Carrick needs to bolster his squad, but hasn’t found his best level with regularity since taking the step up to the Premier League. United would be betting on his profile, not his production. We may find out how wise of a bet that would prove to be in the near future.
