Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be set for a surprise return to the Premier League after emerging as one of the leading candidates for a vacant managerial position.

The development comes just days after Kieran McKenna stepped down from his role, bringing an end to a remarkable spell in charge.

McKenna guided the club back to the Premier League before deciding to step away from management.

According to BBC Sport, Solskjaer is high on the shortlist as the search for a new head coach gathers pace.

The Norwegian has not managed in English football since leaving Manchester United in November 2021.

During his time at Old Trafford, Solskjaer guided the club to a second-place Premier League finish in 2020/21 and reached the Europa League final.

BBC Sport report that McKenna and his assistant Martyn Pert both worked under Solskjaer at Manchester United during that successful campaign.

That existing connection is understood to be one factor behind his consideration.

After leaving Old Trafford, Solskjaer took a break from management before returning with Turkish side Besiktas.

However, he departed the club last summer and has been searching for his next opportunity since.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was keen on a swift return to management.

He was even considered for a return to Manchester United following Ruben Amorim’s departure earlier this year.

The report states United ultimately decided against reappointing a former manager, opting instead to hand the role to Michael Carrick.

Carrick initially arrived on an interim basis before impressing club officials and being given the position permanently.

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil is also said to be among the contenders for the vacancy.

However, Strasbourg remain hopeful of keeping their current head coach despite reported interest.

For Solskjaer, a return to the Premier League would represent another opportunity to rebuild his managerial reputation and re-establish himself in English football.

BBC Sport report that discussions are ongoing as the club continue evaluating their options following McKenna’s exit.
