"Running the rule": Man Utd now want £25m PL midfielder alongside Fernandes

Manchester United are considering an approach for Fulham star Sander Berge as they look to reinforce their midfield department ahead of next season, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils have already sealed an agreement to land Atalanta midfielder Ederson for around £39 million, and he is scheduled to join the club after the World Cup with Brazil.

The club could pursue two more midfielders from the transfer market. West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes is highly regarded, and talks are ongoing with the Hammers.

United have not ruled out the possibility of a third midfielder if Manuel Ugarte departs.

The Athletic now claim that Berge is a ‘player that United are running the rule over as an option’. He was a target for the club prior to his move from Burnley to Fulham in 2024.

The Cottagers would want a profit on the £25m fee they paid to the Clarets.

United could target Berge to replace Ugarte

The Red Devils will lose Casemiro on a free transfer when his contract expires on June 30. They plan to bring in at least two midfielders ahead of their return to Champions League football.

Ederson is one of those, and Fernandes looks likely to be the other. Talks are ongoing behind the scenes with the Hammers, and United remain optimistic of negotiating a lower transfer fee.

A third midfield recruit could be pursued if Ugarte departs. That looks like a possibility with Galatasaray, Napoli and Atletico Madrid on the trail of the Uruguayan, who could be sold for £24m.

If that were to be the case, Berge could emerge as a genuine target. The Norwegian star had a fine 2025/26 season with the Cottagers, completing 90 percent of his passes.

He also won 62 percent of his aerial duels with four recoveries and almost two tackles per outing.

Berge would provide an upgrade on Ugarte in terms of distribution. His progressive passing is better than the Uruguayan, who has failed to meet expectations with the Red Devils.

Fulham want a profit on the £25m fee spent. A deal for around £30-35m could materialise.
