The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as the Magpies and Arsenal are linked with a free agent.
Newcastle United are facing major competition from Premier League champions Arsenal as they look to secure the services of one of the most in-demand free agents this summer.
The Magpies have already made their first signing of the summer transfer window after securing a deal for young French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims and are now believed to be working on big money deals for Manchester City keeper James Trafford and Osasuna and Spain winger Victor Munoz. However, the departures of experienced full-back duo Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth has left a sizeable hole in Eddie Howe’s defensive options and that remains a priority for the remainder of the window.
Newcastle have been continually linked with a move for Celta Vigo and Spain star Oscar Mingueza as he approaches the final weeks of his current deal with the La Liga outfit. A new contract is yet to be agreed and the 27-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the month.
Speaking in April, Celta’s director of football, Marco Garces, told Spanish outlet AS: "We are committed to stability and we are very proud of what this team has achieved during this year. It doesn't change our plans at all. He is a player who is doing too well, who participates with the Spanish National Team and obviously has bidders who have more money than we can put in. So, it looks difficult, but you have a proposal of ours. Iago (Aspas) also has a proposal from us and we remain very optimistic. Of course Mingueza is a player who has given us a lot, who has that dose of quality that we need in the last third, but Iago's thing would also hurt."
Although Aspas has now extended his time with Celta by a further season, Mingueza’s departure appears inevitable and Sport Witness have now claimed Newcastle and Premier League champions Arsenal are battling it out to secure his signature. The report also reveals the versatile defender is represented by the Unique Sports Group agency, who also represented former Magpies star Anthony Gordon and played a role in his move to Barcelona.
