Everton’s Senegal duo lose World Cup opener to France

Everton duo Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye were part of Senegal’s team that lost 3-1 to France in their World Cup opener on Tuesday.

Idrissa Gueye started in midfield and played 88 minutes of the contest at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Ndiaye was introduced off the bench for the final seven minutes. He set up Ibrahim Mbaye for a stunning goal, but the Lions of Teranga had seemingly lost the contest by that point.

Senegal were the better team in the first-half and were unfortunate not to break the deadlock.

Nicolas Jackson went close when he struck the post before Ismaila Sarr blazed over from close range.

France came out significantly improved after the break and were controversially denied a penalty when Sadio Mane brought down Kylian Mbappe in the box.

However, it didn’t take long for Mbappe to find the net as he delivered a breakthrough with a low shot after 66 minutes.

The goal drew an immediate response from Jackson who scored but an offside flag curtailed his celebrations.

Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola extended his country’s lead with a delightful chip soon after coming off the bench.

Mbaye struck a 95th-minute goal to spark hopes of a comeback, but it was too little too late then.

And their hopes were quickly extinguished as Mbappe rifled home a sensational long-range effort, sealing a comfortable 3-1 victory.

There is no time for Senegal to dwell on this defeat, as they take on Norway next week in a must-win game for the African side.

The recent AFCON winners’ final group match against Iraq is scheduled on June 26.
