Chelsea Make Surprising Decision On £70M Pair Who Started Just 12 Games Between Them Last Season

**Chelsea duo Jamie Gittens and Dario Essugo will be part of the club’s plans for the 2026/27 season, according to reports.**

[_The Athletic_](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7361885/2026/06/16/transfer-dealsheet-man-utd-arsenal-liverpool/) claim that despite the difficulties that the two players had staying fit, they are expected to remain at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Gittens had a pretty terrible first 12 months with the Blues following his £51.5m move from Borussia Dortmund.

He made just 12 starts in all competitions, scoring 1 goal and providing 5 assists before a hamstring injury in January against West Ham ended his season.

Gittens has been pictured back out on the grass in recent days, which suggests that he will be ready to impress new manager Xabi Alonso when the squad returns to training next month.

The midfielder actually agreed to join the Blues from Sporting Lisbon in March last year, before officially making the £18.5m switch a few months later.

Essugo made his debut in the Club World Cup, making three appearances in total, but an injury sustained on international duty last September blighted his first season in London.

The Portuguese international was not named in the starting lineup for a single match, but he did make a big impact after coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup against Wrexham.

Essugo’s two assists in extra time ensured that Chelsea made it through to the quarter-finals, after being given a scare by their lower league opponents.

Chelsea will sanction the departures of other players

Filip Jorgensen, Axel Disasi, David Datro Fofana, Tyrique George and Gabriel Slonina are all likely to be sold before the transfer window closes.

Aaron Anselmino, Deivid Washington, Jimmy-Jay Morgan [**and several others**](https://chelseanews.com/blog/chelsea-transfer-news-shim-mheuka-harrison-murray-campbell-kaiden-wilson/) are set to be loaned out to give them the best chance of getting regular football.

With no European games next campaign, Alonso won’t need a sizeable squad, so trimming down the list of players is going to be a key focus between now and August.
