Newcastle United To “Battle” Arsenal for Defender

Newcastle United are preparing to “battle” Arsenal for an “in-demand” free agent, says the Shields Gazette.

Spanish defender Oscar Mingueza looks likely to leave Celta Vigo when his contract expires, and that has put clubs on high alert.

The 27-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the month. He is on Newcastle’s radar as they are short on defenders after Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth’s departures at the end of last season.

Newcastle and Arsenal “Most Interested” in Mingueza

Sport Witness, quoting reports in the Spanish media, claim that Newcastle have been monitoring the right-back’s situation since late last year.

Celta don’t want Mingueza to leave, but he rejected a new contract offer, and Sport Witness say that the parties have been unable to reach an agreement.

Mingueza featured 47 times for Celta last season, scoring one goal and making six assists.

He has made four appearances for Spain, but missed out on their World Cup squad. His last appearance came in the Nations League last year.

He is a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, and worked his way up to Barça’s first team, making his debut in 2020. He went on to make 66 appearances for the club, scoring two goals before moving to Celta in 2022 (info via FotMob).

His primary position is right-back, but he can play in a variety of positions, including left-back and wing-back.

Newcastle and Arsenal aren’t alone in their admiration of Mingueza. Sport Witness reported in January that Aston Villa had tried to sign him in 2025. West Ham United reportedly joined the chase in January, although their pursuit will likely be over after their relegation to the Championship.

Sport Witness reported as recently as April that Fulham had joined the list, but Arsenal and Newcastle are considered to have the edge, for different reasons.

Arsenal can offer Mingueza Champions League football, unlike Newcastle. Interestingly though, Sport Witness report that Mingueza is represented by the Unique Sports Group agency, who also represent Anthony Gordon and negotiated his move from Tyneside to Barcelona.

That relationship could give Newcastle the edge if they decide to move forward with an offer.
