Manchester United’s presence at the World Cup continues to be felt off the pitch, with several former players and staff involved in key international moments across the tournament.

Familiar faces from Old Trafford have been making headlines as of late.

One of those is former interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who is currently leading Austria at the World Cup finals.

Austria produced a memorable result in San Francisco earlier today, beating debutants Jordan 3-1 to secure their first World Cup win since 1990.

The European side had to fight for the result after taking an early lead through a superb strike from Romano Schmid, only for Jordan to respond early in the second half with a curling finish from Ali Olwan.

Rangnick’s side were then handed a stroke of fortune when Yazan Al Arab turned the ball into his own net from a corner in the 76th minute.

The victory was sealed deep into injury time when Marko Arnautovic converted from the penalty spot after a handball, confirming Austria’s long-awaited success on the world stage.

Ralf Rangnick breaks 36-year record

The result also marks Austria’s first World Cup win since their 2-1 victory over the United States in June 1990, underlining the significance of the achievement.

Ralf Rangnick, who briefly took charge at Manchester United in December 2021 as interim manager, departed Old Trafford in May 2022 by mutual agreement.

He later transitioned fully into his role as Austria head coach in June 2022, where he has since overseen their return to a major tournament after years away from the global stage.

His time at United was always intended to be temporary, with his long-term focus shifting towards national team management.

Despite that, his name has remained linked with senior football roles across Europe, including a possible return to club management.

AC Milan have previously explored the idea of bringing the 67-year-old in as either sporting director or technical director.

However, Rangnick has made it clear that his commitment remains with Austria for the time being.

“Everyone probably noticed that something extraordinary happened at AC Milan last weekend.

“My only point of contact regarding contractual matters is and remains the Austrian Federation.”

For now, the former United boss continues to focus on international duty, with Austria’s World Cup campaign off to a historic start.
