Caoimhin Kelleher spent a decade at Anfield.

But at the end of the 2024/25 season, the Irish ‘keeper made the £12.5 million move to Brentford, in a deal that could rise to as much as £18 million through performance-related add-ons.

Kelleher signed a five-year contract at the Community Stadium, with an option for a further year – a strong show of faith from Brentford head coach Keith Andrews, who handed him the number one shirt vacated by Mark Flekken following the Dutchman’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen.

Stepping up as an undisputed starter for the first time in his career, the 26-year-old delivered one of the more quietly impressive goalkeeper seasons in the Premier League in 2025-26.

He made 108 saves across 37 appearances, keeping 10 clean sheets as Brentford secured a 9th-placed finish.

Many Reds fans were not happy when the decision was made for him to be moved on, but it was understandable that the Irishman wanted regular football.

Sections of the fanbase no doubt retain hope that Kelleher could one day return to Anfield.

Gregg Evans of the Athletic has reported that while there is no buy-back clause, it would not stop Liverpool potentially looking to bring him back in the future:

“There was no buyback clause in the deal which took him to west London, but that is not to say he would not appeal in the future — especially if he performs well again next season.”

“Finding a full-time replacement for Alisson is going to be tough, but Kelleher is one of the few to have shown he is capable of fitting in. Ideally, though, Liverpool are able to promote from within, with all eyes on how the Brazilian’s understudies progress in the coming campaign.”

For Liverpool supporters watching on, it is a bittersweet picture. Caoimhin Kelleher proved beyond doubt this season that he is a genuine Premier League number one – and the fact that he had to leave Anfield to prove it will sting for many fans. Whether a reunion ever materialises remains to be seen.
