Sheffield Wednesday legend Chris Waddle believes offers will be tabled for Owls star Pierce Charles this summer.

The 20-year-old has been a bright light in dark times for Wednesday, who have shown little hesitation using the youngster at senior level.

Chris Waddle on Pierce Charles’ Sheffield Wednesday future

Waddle, who starred for Wednesday between 1992 and 1996, believes Charles will be the subject of bids in the coming months.

“Someone will take a dabble at him,” he told The Yorkshire Post. “He's proved that he's a very good ‘keeper with his feet, we know that. He's done well, I watched him for Northern Ireland, he had a couple of saves to do but his distribution and his calmness on the ball is very good.

“He’s a modern-day goalkeeper. It was years ago you wanted goalkeepers who would come and catch crosses and be 6ft 5ins. Now, goalkeepers, you want them to play with their feet, especially at a higher level, and that ticks a lot of boxes with Pierce Charles.

“He will have offers. There’s talk of Man City. Man City seem to buy everybody. Whether he'll get in that team, I don't know, with [Gianluigi] Donnarumma there I don't see it. Whether they're going to offload a goalie, I don't know. The only benefit with Wednesday would be if the bids are successful, they might be able to get him on a year loan.”

Pierce Charles transfer talk

The lure of Charles’ former club Manchester City is often strong but Wednesday may hope he sees the value in staying put and enjoying regular football.

Regarding Charles’ future, Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen told The Star: “In the big picture we want to be a club that can find and develop talent, let them be effective in the first team and make a sustainable financial model. For Pierce, we will all do all that we can to keep him in this phase here.

“He is a part of our identity and we would love to have him as a part of our future. I know David [Storch] and everyone loves him - and that everyone will do everything to keep him. Let’s see what happens when the season is done.”
