Former Manchester United idol Roy Keane was never one to shy away from controversy during his playing career, and the polarising figure has continued to court attention since hanging up his boots. Following a short spell in management, the former Irish international moved into punditry and has remained a fixture on Sky Sports and ITV ever since.

Keane is presently in the United States with ITV covering the ongoing World Cup and has already caused a stir with some of his observations about the tournament.

But what is Keane like beyond the beautiful game? We have delved deeper, from the midfielder's domestic life to his well-known son-in-law.

Roy Keane's wife and family

Roy Keane is married to long-standing partner Theresa Doyle, with the pair having been wed for nearly three decades. They share a large family, the couple having welcomed five children: Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah, and Alanna.

While generally keeping his family life private, Keane occasionally offers insights into his domestic world via social media. He's also fond of animals, with Keane having shared photographs of his pets previously.

Keane's relationship with Doyle had an inauspicious beginning after she walked out of their initial date following an uninspiring proposal to visit the cinema. Speaking to RTE, he recalled: "She got out and I said, 'Might see you next week?' and she said ,'I don't think so' and slammed the door. That was my first date. And we're still married."

Roy Keane's famous footballer son-in-law

Professional football is a family affair, though perhaps not in the conventional sense. That is because Keane's daughter Leah is married to footballer Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

The Southampton captain found himself caught up in the Spygate scandal that sent shockwaves through football in May, after the Championship club were ejected from the play-offs for spying on their rivals.

Harwood-Bellis had playfully marked Southampton's victory over Middlesbrough by making a binocular gesture - something that came back to haunt him when they were removed from the competition.

The pair wed earlier this year, with Leah sharing photographs on Instagram with the caption: "Last night as a Keane." Harwood-Bellis disclosed that Keane had been offering him guidance when the couple first started dating, though he would have undoubtedly faced a telling-off after the defender netted for England against his father-in-law's cherished Ireland in November 2024 on his England debut.

Roy Keane's love for different sport

Keane's sporting journey might have taken an entirely different path had he persevered with hurling during his youth. The Cork native was a talented hurler in his time but chose to pursue football instead.

Keane has publicly stated that the finest sporting spectacle in the world is the hurling All-Ireland final and has even ranked it above the Champions League final. The former Red Devils star brought Overlap co-hosts Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville to Croke Park in Dublin to try their hand at hurling. It is fair to say he outshone the other two...
